Petrels prevail at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Piedmont Lions 17-16 after an intense fourth quarter Wednesday night.

Kaitlynn Alford led with five goals followed by Ally Moir and Makenna Bowens with three each. Bowens made three assists while Moir made two, and Sydney Trammell and DeAnna Hyde both scored a pair of goals.

Piedmont scored the first goal of the game, but Alford responded with her first goal 10 seconds later thanks to an assistant from Bowens. The Lions put up a fair fight in the first quarter, but Alford and Bowens combined once again to give Oglethorpe a 5-3 lead at the end of the period.

The Lions also scored the first goal of the second period, but Bowens repeated her quick thinking and kept Oglethorpe on top with another goal. However, Piedmont managed to gain the lead twice in the period, and Oglethorpe headed into halftime down 9-8 after a late goal by the Lions.

Piedmont was the first to score in the third quarter as well, and moved to an 11-9 lead even after a goal by Alford. The Petrels mounted a comeback in the latter half of the period, as Bowens, Moir and Alford combined for a 4-0 run. The Lions scored the last goal of the quarter, but Oglethorpe headed into the fourth up 13-12.

Trammell and Hyde quickly made their second goals at the beginning of the final quarter, and Piedmont struggled to respond. Trammell and Alford respectively scored Oglethorpe's final goal and bumped the Petrels to a 17-13 lead.

With half of the period remaining, Piedmont began their comeback attempt. The Lions managed three more goals and had a man-up opportunity for two minutes with a chance to tie. Oglethorpe's defense held strong by denying Piedmont the full duration of the pair of late penalties, and the Petrels walked away with a 17-16 win.
