LAGRANGE, Ga.—Mason Pearcy's three-hit day and a bases-loaded ninth were not enough as Oglethorpe's baseball team dropped a 7-4 game at LaGrange Tuesday night on the road. The Stormy Petrels snapped a two-game winning streak early in the season and fell to 3-2 overall.
Oglethorpe fell behind early with LaGrange scoring the game's first three runs, then leading 7-2 through seven innings. Sam Mills then reached on an error and scored on another error in the eighth before a two-out triple from Pearcy made it 7-4.
Although unable to push Pearcy across in the eighth, the Petrels tried to rally in the ninth with the first two reaching on walks then Jaxson Corr singling to left-center to load the bases with nobody out. It brought up the 3-4-5 in the lineup with the tying run aboard and the go-ahead run at the plate, but two strikeouts and a popout for LaGrange ended the threat.
Pearcy also factored into Oglethorpe's second-inning run by legging out an infield single with two out to drive home Brick Conway from third. Two innings later, Cooper Krause scored on an error in an earlier rally attempt that saw the first two reach.
Game Notes
- Pearcy finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI's. Three other Petrels had multiple hits: Conway (2-for-4), Krause (2-for-5) and Mills (2-for-5).
- The Oglethorpe pitching staff had another great combined effort to allow only three earned runs. Parker Spring went the first four and two-third innings allowing only two earned runs.
- Charlie Boyce got Spring out of some trouble in the fifth before running into error-induced trouble of his own in the sixth, leading way for Colin Stewart and Hunter Spence to close out the last two and two-third innings scoreless.
- Spring struck out four before Stewart struck out three.
