Early homers help Petrels defeat Scots

ATLANTA—A solo shot from Jonathan Cruz in the first inning followed by a two-run shot from Brick Conway in the second inning helped the Oglethorpe baseball team overcome an early deficit and beat Maryville 7-6 Sunday evening under the lights of Hermance Stadium.

They were the first home runs of the season for Cruz and Conway as the Stormy Petrels improved to 5-3 on the year with their second straight win. Cruz added two more singles for a three-hit game along with a sacrifice RBI in the fourth inning that gave Oglethorpe a 5-3 lead.

It was 3-0 Maryville until the back-to-back innings with the long ball that made it 3-3. Then, a Mason Pearcy RBI bases-loaded walk gave Oglethorpe a 4-3 lead before Cruz's RBI that made it 5-3.

Maryville tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fifth, but an Isaiah Pou single through the right side in the bottom half gave the Petrels the lead back. Oglethorpe played small ball again in the sixth to pick up an insurance run on a sacrifice from Cooper Krause, scoring Jaxson Corr.

Pou ended up making one of the best plays on defense in the seventh when he erased the would-be advancing runner to third on a fly ball to right. Pou made the catch in right, then threw out Nick Curry attempting to advance. Maryville's Zach Devries homered four pitches later on what would have tied the game but instead only cut it to 7-6.

From there, Colin Stewart entered and retired each of the last seven batters of the ballgame to pick up his first save.

Game Notes

  • Cruz went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's.
  • Conway went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBI's.
  • Colby James made the start on the hill and went the first three innings before Dylan Quintilio went the next 3.2. Quintilio picked up the win in relief.
  • Stewart went the final 2.1 innings retiring all seven on 32 pitches. He struck out three.
