ATLANTA – As the end of the regular season approaches, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels celebrated this year's graduates before falling 89-68 to the Sewanee Tigers.
In between tonight's men's and women's games, the graduating players and cheerleaders were recognized. Cheerleaders included Aurelia Crumby, Zahairah Shipman, Trinity Chism, and Kyla Jordan. Women's basketball player Carley Bell was recognized, then men's players Chris Feeney and Uba Ezigbo.
Perry Robinson led with 21 points, followed by Jordan James with 13, and Uba Ezigbo and Malachi Dooley both with 10. Chris Feeney recorded a career high of five points.Â
The game opened with a 3-pointer from the Tigers, but Robinson quickly responded with a layup to get the Petrels going. However, Sewanee managed several damaging runs in the first half, and sent Oglethorpe into halftime down 44-26.Â
The second half started off with back-to-back baskets from James and Dooley, as the Petrels headed into the period with a bit more pep in their step. This stride helped lessen the damage from the first half but could not give Oglethorpe the lead.
The Petrels continued to fight until the end, but the Tigers had already created too big of a gap to breach. Feeney made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer look easy, but Oglethorpe ultimately fell 89-68.
"We just laid an egg tonight," said Head Coach Philip Ponder. "I didn't recognize that team. We made a bunch of mistakes early defensively, and they made us pay for it. When we got down, we panicked on offense and started forcing shots, and the game just snowballed on us. We just have to put that one behind us and come back ready to go on Sunday."
Game Notes
- Jordan James made a career high number of free-throws.
- Ethan Weems made the first block of his collegiate career.
- The game began almost an hour after the scheduled start time, as the women's game beforehand went into double overtime.Â
- Oglethorpe recorded eight fastbreak points versus Sewanee's four.
