Kinnan, Petrels walk off in 11th inning

ATLANTA—Trey Kinnan put down the perfect bunt, and the Oglethorpe baseball team walked off on a squeeze play in the bottom of the 11th inning to secure a 4-3 win over Covenant Tuesday night in a nonconference game at Hermance Stadium.

It was Oglethorpe's third straight win and got the Stormy Petrels back to .500 at 8-8 overall on the year.

Alex Steckler, pinch running for Sam Mills, scored the winning run after Mills got the inning started when he reached on a hit batter with one out. Carter Guarino then singled him to third in the next at-bat, and Kinnan took the first pitch he saw to drive in the game-winning run.

A game destined for extra innings, Kinnan's RBI sacrifice ended a five-inning scoring draught for both teams. Oglethorpe took the lead in the bottom of the third when Kinnan, who walked and stole second, scampered home on a wild pitch. The rest of the scoring in the game happened in the sixth inning when Covenant plated three in the top half to go ahead 3-1 only to see Oglethorpe answer back with two to tie in the bottom half.

Brick Conway came home on an error from Covenant to start Oglethorpe's sixth-inning scoring, then Mills singled home Mason Pearcy in the same at-bat on a liner up the middle.

Game Notes

  • Three of Oglethorpe's seven hits came off the bat of Pearcy, who went 3-for-5 with a run.
  • Guarino went 1-for-2 after coming in as a pinch hitter starting in the ninth.
  • The Petrels went 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts, all coming from five players.
  • Charlie Boyce got the start and went five strong innings before running into error-induced trouble in the sixth. He ended with no decision and a line of 5.1 innings, five hits, three runs, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
  • Oglethorpe's relief staff had the same success Boyce had over his first five innings. Tate Henderson finish the sixth and went the seventh and eighth without allowing a run. Parker Spring went two scoreless one-hit frames in the ninth and 10th. Then, Gavin Latham pitched a perfect 11th.
  • Lathan earned the win to move to 1-0.
