Pou’s slam helps Petrels even Berry series

ROME, Ga.—A go-ahead third-inning grand slam from freshman Isaiah Pou helped the Oglethorpe baseball team win game two and split a Saturday Southern Athletic Association doubleheader with Berry. Berry won game one 13-3 but Oglethorpe bounced back and evened the series with a 9-6 win in game two.

Oglethorpe stayed .500 on the season, moving to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in the SAA. The Stormy Petrels will look to win their second conference series of the year Sunday in the rubber game at 12 p.m.

Game Two | Oglethorpe 9, Berry 6

Three first-inning runs saw Oglethorpe with the early lead until Berry went ahead 5-3 with two in the first and three in the second. That lead lasted until the top half of the third when Pou hit his first collegiate home run to put Oglethorpe ahead for good at 8-5.

Oglethorpe's third-inning scoring happened despite having two out and the bases empty. Jonathan Cruz and Brick Conway both had singles to right field, then Mason Pearcy loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch. Sam Mills singled next to score one and keep the bases loaded, then Pou cleared them with the team's sixth dinger of the season.

Cruz led the Petrels at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort and scoring three times. Colby James picked up the win after 4.1 innings of work, and Colin Stewart earned the save with 2.2 relief innings of one-hit, scoreless baseball.

Game One | Oglethorpe 3, Berry 13

Berry jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. An RBI double in the second made it 1-0, then four runs on two hits and two errors in the third made it 5-0 and two runs on five hits in the fourth made it 7-1.

Drew Jabaley singled home a run in the seventh inning to make it 10-2 and Cooper Krause would make it 10-3 on a sacrifice fly one batter later, but it was too little and too late.

Krause finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Mills went 2-for-3 with a run.
