Baseball leads early but falls in rubber game

ROME, Ga.—Brick Conway went 3-for-4 with a go-ahead RBI double in the fourth inning, then Sam Mills followed with an RBI to make it 2-0, but Oglethorpe's baseball team lost the rubber-game finale of a three-game Southern Athletic Association set with Berry Sunday afternoon. After the teams split Saturday's doubleheader, Berry took the series with a 6-2 win in the finale.

The loss moved Oglethorpe to 9-10 (3-3 SAA) and marked the first rubber-game loss the Stormy Petrels suffered this season in three such games.

Oglethorpe's fourth inning set the Petrels on track to take their second SAA series win, but Berry was quick to respond. With two runs in the fifth, the Vikings tied the game at 2-2, then the Vikings went into the lead for good with four runs in the sixth.

Oglethorpe rallied with two out in the ninth when Mills doubled home Conway to make it 6-3, then Isaiah Pou, who hit a lead-changing grand slam Saturday, walked to bring the tying run to the plate. However, a groundout ended the threat for Berry.

Game Notes

  • Conway's 3-for-4 effort came alongside two runs and an RBI.
  • Pou went 1-for-2 with two walks.
  • Dylan Quintilio suffered his first loss of the season to move to 3-1 after he went 5.2 innings, in line for the win until Berry's big sixth.
  • Paul Gaeta went the last 2.1 innings allowing only one hit and no runs, walking one and striking out one.
