LOOKOUT MOUTAIN, Ga.—A combined 31 runs off 39 hits told the story of a 16-15 finish that fittingly ended on a walk-off win for Covenant over Oglethorpe Tuesday night in a nonconference game.
The game was a repeat of Oglethorpe's own 4-3 walk-off win posted against Covenant just one week ago.
The scoring by inning looked like the seismograph in the movie "Volcano." Covenant took a commanding lead with five runs in the bottom of the second only to see that lead vanish when Oglethorpe tied it with five runs in the third and go ahead 8-5 with three runs in the fourth.
Covenant trimmed the lead to 8-7 but Oglethorpe extended its lead once again with four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh. It was 13-7 when teams stretched, then Covenant tied the game with six runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Oglethorpe still looked to win the game with a two-run top half of the eighth, but Covenant cut that lead in half in the eighth then scored two to win in the bottom of the ninth.
Game Notes
- Brick Conway and Mason Pearcy both went 5-for-6, one hit shy of Oglethorpe's record for hits in a single game. Conway added five runs and an RBI. Pearcy added two runs and four RBI's.
- Cooper Krause went 4-for-6 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.
- Sam Mills had three hits, going 3-for-5.
