ORLANDO, Fla.—The Oglethorpe men's tennis team played five matches in three days and hardly showed signs of slowing, winning three of the last four and each of the last two to complete a successful week in Orlando during spring break.
The Stormy Petrels lost to No. 34 Hobart 7-2, bounced back to win against Wisconsin Eau Claire 8-1, lost to Luther 6-3, then finished the trip with a 6-3 win over Goucher and 9-0 win over Endicott.
Match Notes | Day One vs. Hobart
- Daniel Cohen and Sam Wasko earned a hard-fought 8-5 win over No. 34 Hobart at the No. 1 doubles spot.
- Noah George picked up the other Oglethorpe point with a third set super tiebreaker victory at No. 6 singles. He bounced back from losing the opening set in a breaker by winning set two 6-1, the claiming the match with a 10-4 win in the super.
Match Notes | Day Two vs. Wisconsin Eau Claire and Luther
- Oglethorpe started day two with an easy win over Wisconsin Eau Claire. After sweeping doubles, the Stormy Petrels won five of the six singles in straight sets to improve to 3-2.
- George at No. 4 singles had the easiest win at 6-0, 6-3.
- The Petrels looked to sweep the day with a win against Luther later in the day, but came up short in the closest match of the week. Leading 2-1 after doubles, Oglethorpe went to a third set super tiebreaker in five of six singles matches but came up short in all but one.
- Zack Raymond took his match 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 at No. 3 singles as the only other point against Luther.
- Cohen and Cameron Burkes even went extra points in their super tiebreaker, Cohen falling 14-12 and Burkes falling 11-9. Both their first sets went to a tiebreak as well.
- Cohen and Wasko at No. 1 doubles also picked up a win in a breaker.
Match Notes | Day Three vs. Goucher and Endicott
- Zach Raymond and Noah George won an important match in a tightly contested 8-7 finish at No. 3 doubles to help Oglethorpe lead 2-1 after doubles against Goucher.
- After that, four of six Petrels turned in victory in singles to clinch the win. Bailey Raymond at No. 1 was pushed to a third set super tiebreaker and won it 10-4. Wasko at No. 4 won his second set in a breaker, and Tony Molinet at No. 6 also won a close match, 6-4, 7-5.
- Oglethorpe moved on to face Endicott to finish the trip later in the day and won 9-0.
- The closest doubles match finished 8-4, and the Petrels did not drop a set in singles.
