ATLANTA – In a night full of season and career highs, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Southwestern Pirates 24-14.
Ally Moir led with eight goals and five assists, season highs for both. Makenna Bowens tied her career high of five goals and season high of seven draw controls. Anna Ramsden and Amanda Cason both scored three goals while DeAnna Hyde and Amber Fuentes had two. Savannah Freeman made a career high of three assists, while goalie Tori Perez made seven saves.
Cason earned the first goal just 20 seconds into the game, thanks to an assist from Moir. Alli White quickly made the next goal off a free position shot, and the Petrels would make it to a 5-0 lead before the Pirates could score. Southwestern seemed to discover more energy toward the end of the period, but Oglethorpe finished the first quarter up 9-6.Â
Bowens' first goal of the second quarter received a quick response from the Pirates but proved no threat to the Petrels. Ramsden kicked off a three-goal run that negated Southwestern's next two goals and the Petrels headed into halftime up 14-10.Â
The first half seemed like it would be a close game, and then Oglethorpe outscored Southwestern 5-1 in the third quarter. Fuentes and Cason both took advantage of man-up opportunities, and Perez's only allowed goal came from a free position shot.
Bowens was the first to score again in the fourth and final quarter, despite being a man down from a penalty late in the previous period. The Pirates did manage to break out of running clock, but the Petrels remained persistent. Ramsden made the last goal in the final 30 seconds, returning the game to running clock and solidifying Oglethorpe's 24-14 win.
