ROME, Ga.—The Oglethorpe volleyball team headed up to Rome, Georgia, to compete in the Berry National Invitational. They participated in four matches this weekend but sadly only came home with one win.
The highlight of the weekend came Friday evening when the Stormy Petrels topped the Averett University Cougars. The Petrels worked hard during the first set, with Ashlynn Stephens having a total of 14 digs, but they ended up losing 25-22. For the next three games, the Petrels came back fighting and won all three, winning them the match. Briella Kohler, who eventually earned a spot on the all-tournament team, had a great match with 12 kills throughout.
Match three of the invitational was up against the Wittenberg University Tigers. The Stormy Petrels lost the first two sets, but came back with a bang winning the third set 25-19. They fought hard but lost the fourth set giving the Tigers the match. Both Legacy Guider and Abby Wheeler amassed 10 digs against the Tigers.
While the first match of the weekend did not end in a win, the Stormy Petrels fought hard against the Berry College Vikings. After losing the first two sets despite their best efforts, Gracie Sims helped with 10 kills. Madison Williams had a total of three blocks helping the Stormy Petrels come back in the third set, but the Vikings ended up taking it 26-24.
For the fourth and final match of the weekend, the Stormy Petrels were pitted against Transylvania University. They lost all three sets with closer scores each time, with the last one ending in a score of 25-18. Autumn Lilly was a leader in this match with a total of 16 assists, five digs and one ace.
Oglethorpe will play two games in Alabama before returning home on September 29 at 12 p.m. to play Millsaps College in Dorough Field House.
