Petrels snap back with comeback SAA win

MEMPHIS- With two late goals, the Oglethorpe men's soccer team picked up their first Southern Athletic Association win defeating the Rhodes Lynx 2-1 Saturday afternoon on the road. The Stormy Petrels trailed 1-0 in the 74th minute before Stanlee Etienne and Shama Shasha helped flip the script.

The first half began with possession toward the Lynx, shooting three quick shots off the bat. Daniel Gardner responded quickly in the 16th minute with a strong shot but could not score. In the 33rd minute, the Lynx put on the pressure and scored, making the score 1-0. Christian Watson looked to equalize in the 44th minute but came up short.

The Petrels came out of halftime with a fire beginning with a shot from Kaden Greenfield in the 52nd minute. The Lynx returned the fire with a shot yet contained by goalkeeper Sebastian Lewis. Rhys Pollard had a strong shot giving the Petrels some offensive wind.

Etienne equalized when the Petrels needed it most, scoring off a direct free kick as he drove the ball just below the crossbar blazing past the goalie in the 74th minute. The Lynx came back with a shot but Lewis picked up another save, keeping Rhodes at bay.

Looking to advance, Pollard threw in a perfectly placed ball to the center of the box that got knocked loose in chaos. Shasha swooped in to finish the play knocking the ball into the back of the net to advance the Petrels to make the score 2-1 in the 90th minute. The Lynx ran out of time to take the game, leading to an Oglethorpe win.
