Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Story by Abby Wheeler

Hanks scores twice as Petrels bounce back with 2-0 win

ATLANTA- Two goals by Delaney Hanks propelled the Oglethorpe women's soccer team to their first Southern Athletic Association win of the season, a 2-0 victory versus Southwestern University on Sunday.

The Petrels came into the first half with fire, having possession of the offense almost immediately. In the eighth minute, quick passes came from Emma Perkins and Ashley Flores to put in a cross to Hanks where she finished the play with a strong shot, sailing past the Pirates' goalkeeper. This early lead of 1-0 gave the Petrels a great start to set the tone for the half.

Continuing their pressure, Hanks took another shot followed up by Izzy Aurelia. The Pirates tried to find a goal, yet it was contained by Katherine Crim. Oglethorpe maintained momentum for the majority of the half, outshooting Southwestern 6-4. Crim also had more saves than the Pirates, tallying two at the break.

Southwestern began the second half with some pressure in a shot, but Crim stepped in to keep her shutout intact. Myleigh Oglesby responded quickly with a shot to the top of the goal. Starting in the 78th minute, there were four shots in a row from Aurelia, Gabi Plaia, Allyssa Hearn and Flores.

A through ball by Lauren Byers in the 83rd minute, deflected by a Pirate player, found Hanks again in the box for a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper where she sent it to the back of the net, increasing the score to 2-0 for the Petrels. The Pirates looked for a last-minute answer by taking another shot, but it was no match for Crim. This offensive pressure and goalkeeping shutout led the Petrels to victory.
