DANVILLE, Ky. – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels played their final matches of the Southern Athletic Association season this weekend, falling 3-0 at Sewanee and 3-1 at Centre.
Sewanee
Ashlynn Stephens made nine kills and Abby Wheeler had 15 digs.Â
Oglethorpe earned the point of the match, but Sewanee quickly went on a scoring streak. Camdyn George, Madison Williams and Aubrey Hill put a few kills on the board, but the Tigers were overwhelming and Oglethorpe fell 25-18.
The Petrels made more of a dent in the second set, but still fell 25-20. Then, the third set ended 25-12 after a long battle.
Centre
Gracie Sims led with 10 kills, Abby Wheeler with 16 digs, and Madison Williams with eight kills plus seven blocks.
Oglethorpe struggled in the first set, falling 25-16. The Petrels regained some ground in the second set, really pushing the Colonels. Oglethorpe held the lead for most of the period, then Centre charged ahead around the 19-point mark. The Petrels were still the first to reach set point and managed to delay Centre a bit, but the Colonels ultimately took the set 29-27.
Oglethorpe used this momentum in the third set to overpower the Colonels. Alise Mayers made several kills, then she and Sims combined for the finishing touch on the 25-16 win.Â
Oglethorpe continued to fight in the fourth set, using the energy from the big win. However, Centre brought even more energy for a 25-20 win to end the match. This ended Oglethorpe's SAA matches for the season.
