Greensboro poaches home opener

ATLANTA - Despite another incredible performance from senior Malachi Dooley, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels fell 104-96 to the Greensboro Pride on Tuesday.

Dooley hit a career high of 32 points, plus seven rebounds and three assists, for his second straight game of career high scoring. Andrew LaVigne followed with a career high 19 points, then Mason Kemp with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Jackson Kemp posted his second double-double in a row with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Carter Watkins made 11 points.

"When you score 96 points, have fewer turnovers than your opponent, shoot more free throws than your opponent and have more offensive rebounds than your opponent, you should win that game," said head coach Philip Ponder, "but we are just struggling defensively right now. Ingram was not even on our scouting report. He's a freshman playing in his first game ever, and he scored 48 points. We obviously were not prepared for him because we didn't even know who he was. He added a whole new dimension to their team."

The Pride controlled the first 10 minutes of the game, until Oglethorpe began to find some runs. LaVigne, M. Kemp, Dooley, Willard Thompson and Logan Turner combined for a 12-2 run, ending with a dunk from Dooley, to put the Petrels up 25-22. Greensboro briefly regained their lead, until Dooley put the Petrels back up 36-35. The Pride regained their lead once again, this time for the rest of the period. Oglethorpe headed into halftime down 44-38.

Watkins made the first basket of the second period, but Greensboro still kept the Petrels at bay. Oglethorpe found multiple ties in the middle of the period, but could never take a definitive lead. Greensboro truly stole the game with about eight minutes remaining, as the Pride posted a 10-3 run. Turner hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds, but Oglethorpe fell 104-96.

"We will take a few days off for Thanksgiving, and then we will start getting ready for Berry," Ponder added. "Everyone is 0-0 in conference play."
