Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Story by Abby Wheeler

Road series opens with 73-67 victory for Petrels

MONTEAGLE, Tenn.-- Back from a brief break, the Oglethorpe women's basketball team opened a stretch of road games with a strong win over Berea College. Team leader Keimarya Rivera led the team with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Sheraton Foster led in assists with four while tallying 18 of her own points.

The game opened with a jumper from Malia Melton to put the Petrels on the board. A tight first quarter led to the score reading 12-8 and began an aggressive play style. With nine opportunities to make a free throw, the Petrels made eight, a huge part of their opening lead. Looking to heat up the offense, Foster, assisted by Marlie Battle, drained the first three of the game for Oglethorpe.

Foster made an additional 3-pointer followed by a jumper by Rivera for a 5-3 run. Closing in on the lead, Berea picked up the offense but quickly was stopped with a 3-pointer from Winfrey to put the Petrels in the lead 28-23. Three back-to-back free throws from Rivera ended the half with Oglethorpe leading. Despite Berea outshooting Oglethorpe from a stat line, the Petrels' defensive efforts and ability to get the ball back quickly were key in maintaining their lead.

Anna Conza opened the second half with a 3-pointer to set the tone for the rest of the game. Berea began to crawl their way back, but any hope of tying was expunged after a layup from Foster to put the Petrels up 42-36, their biggest lead yet. Crucial steals late in the second half by Battle and Winfrey maintained possession of the ball and helped the Petrels seal the 73-67 victory.
