MONTEAGLE, Tenn.- The Oglethorpe women's basketball team, led by Keimarya Rivera with 23 points and four rebounds and Jaden Winfrey with 14 points, closed out a road trip to Tennessee with a 70-62 victory over Covenant on Tuesday. Rivera and Marlie Battle were named to the all-tournament team.
Opening the game versus the Scots, Rivera picked up the first points off a layup, assisted by Battle. Anna Conza got active early from range with four 3-pointers in the first half. The Petrel defense also had a huge role to play in an early 16-point lead. Battle led both teams in steals going into the half with three. Lauren Phillip, Brooke Herdman and Rivera all picked up one steal themselves. Crucial rebounds from Malia Melton and Battle gave the Petrels plenty of second chance points, propelling their offense.
The second half began with two free throws from Rivera to make the score 40-22. Jaden Winfrey drained a three followed by free throws from Abby Scott to keep the Scots well away from catching up to the Petrels.
A crucial steal from Melton gave Sheraton Foster the opportunity to tally three more points for herself from range. Melton followed up Foster with a 3-pointer of her own, her first of the game. These back-to-back threes got the Petrels settled as Winfrey added to the threes on a 6-2 run. The Petrels took a defining 79-62 victory over Covenant.
