SAN ANTONIO-- Despite offensive efforts from senior Keimarya Rivera with 24 points and 13 rebounds, the Oglethorpe women's basketball team saw its winning streak snapped in a close 77-71 loss to the Trinity Tigers Friday night.
Early points from Malia Melton and Rivera started the Petrels off with a quick 4-0 lead. However, the Tigers quickly responded, adding offensive pressure onto the Petrel defense. Marlie Battle drained the first three points of the game, looking to get the team settled early from range. Lauren Phillip picked up two points of her own, working to close in on the lead that the Tigers created and making the score 27-22. A 3-pointer from Jaden Winfrey ended the half with the Petrels down by five at 38-33.
The second half started out slow for the Petrels, allowing the Tigers to create a nine-point lead early. Aliyah Shaffer minimized that lead to 50-43, but the Tigers ran away with the next few minutes and did not leave Oglethorpe much room to score. A 3-pointer from Conza changed the momentum and made the score 65-50. This momentum pushed Foster to go to work in the paint and made room for Rivera to make four free throws in a row. This climb to minimize the deficit for the Petrels ended after a hard-fought defensive battle and consistency from the free throw line. Running out of time, the Petrel's fell 77-71.
