GEORGETOWN, Texas-- In their second Southern Athletic Association game of the weekend, the Oglethorpe women's basketball team fought hard in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell to Southwestern University 72-67 on Sunday.
The Stormy Petrel offense was spearheaded by Keimarya Rivera with 21 pts and four rebounds. Marlie Battle followed with 15 points of her own and tallied seven rebounds and three steals. Four players recorded multiple 3-pointers.
The first half opened with a 3-pointer from Sheraton Foster to get the Petrels settled into their offense. Jaden Winfrey followed Fosters' 3-pointer with one of her own, giving the Petrels an early 7-4 lead. The Pirates took over possession and ran away with a lead as wide as five points, but Oglethorpe battled back to keep Southwestern at bay.
Briley Elder drained a 3-pointer followed by a jumper from Rivera to tie the score at 25-25. Winfrey made her second three of the half to end the half with the Petrels up by two.
Elder and Rivera got the scoring going early in the second half for the Petrels. Elder's second 3-pointer helped close into an eight-point lead by the Pirates. Consistent free throw shooting kept the Petrels alive. In the third quarter alone, the Petrels made 60% of their shots from the foul line.
Shots made by Battle in the paint late in the fourth pushed the Petrels to within one, but the Pirates were able to pull away with late free throws. Despite relentless fight and good defense, the Petrels took their second SAA loss in a row.
Game Notes
- Foster tallied six points. Melton followed with five points. Battle was 100% from the 3-point line, going 2-for-2.
- Kamaria McDermott recorded the first two points of her collegiate career.
- This game went back and forth with 10 lead changes, and the Petrels tied the game eight times.
- This was the first matchup between the Petrels and Pirates since 2012 where the Pirates won 65-60.
