ATLANTA- Keimarya Rivera's career milestone of 1500 points set the tone for the Oglethorpe women's basketball team this Friday at home in Dorough Field House. A strong 78-57 victory over the Sewanee Tigers improved the Petrels' Southern Athletic Association record to 2-2.
Rivera led the box score tallying 22 points, eight rebounds and one steal. Anna Conza followed with 15 points going 3-6 from the 3-point line. Sheraton Foster led the team in steals with four.
Malia Melton opened the first half with two points in the paint. Jaden Winfrey kickstarted the defensive side for the Petrels with a steal. Melton drained a three making the score 12-7. Looking to pull away after an early deficit, Foster made two 3-point shots along with Conza making an additional three to help give the Petrels a 34-18 lead. Oglethorpe led by 11 at the halftime break.
With seven minutes left in the third quarter, Rivera made her 1500th shot, a huge career milestone. After Conza's second 2-pointer of the game, the Petrels ran away with a 47-30 lead and never looked back.
A 20-point lead made room to feature more of the Stormy Petrels. Gaby LoPresti, Ashton Jones, Abby Scott, Callie Cavender and Genny Rogers kept the lead alive and sealed the win for Oglethorpe. The Tigers ran out of time to respond to the 78-57 lead, so the Petrels picked up their second conference win of the season.
