ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels moved to 1-1 after their second home game resulted in a 13-8 loss to the Piedmont Lions Wednesday evening.
Makenna Bowens tied her career high of five goals and won a career-high of 10 draw controls. Freshman Ellis Mitchum followed with four goals, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Tori Perez made eight saves.
The Petrels started off strong with goals from Bowens and Mitchum, then Piedmont responded with one of their own. Anna Ramsden gave the team a 3-1 lead, but this would be Oglethorpe's last great lead.
The well-matched Petrels and the Lions went back and forth throughout the first half of the game, with the first quarter ending 5-4 and the second at 8-6. Oglethorpe held this edge until the end of the third quarter, when Piedmont pulled away after five straight goals.
The fourth quarter featured a goal from Mitchum and a man-up goal from Anna Ramsden, but also domination from Piedmont. The Lions were able to walk away with the 18-13 win.
