Lumpkin’s strong debut backs Petrels’ win over Hornets

ATLANTA—Freshman Will Lumpkin made the most of his debut after pitching six solid innings and picking up the win to help Oglethorpe defeat Kalamazoo 7-4 in the opening game of a weekend series on Friday. Lumpkin went the first six innings scattering six hits and one walk while striking out three.

A two-RBI single from Kalamazoo in the third and a two-run home run in the sixth were Lumpkin's only real blemishes in an otherwise gem of a debut. The single gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead, but the Stormy Petrels were quick to erase it with a six-run fourth.

This inning saw three runs come in to score on a Cooper Krause RBI ground ball, and Isaiah Pou also highlighted the inning with an RBI triple. Pou then came home to score Oglethorpe's final run on a Nick Tarantino RBI ground ball.

It was 7-2 when Kalamazoo struck with the homer that made it 7-4, but Oglethorpe held the Hornets scoreless for the remaining four innings. In fact, Lumpkin, Tate Henderson and Dylan Quintilio combined to face only three over the minimum in getting the final 12 outs of the game. Henderson struck out the side in a hitless seventh, and Quintilio earned the save, his second of the season, after limiting Kalamazoo to two hits, no runs and no walks over the eighth and ninth.

Game Notes

  • Lumpkin's winning line was: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO.
  • Jonathan Cruz went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run.
  • Pou went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run.
