ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels advanced to the Southern Athletic Association semifinals after defeating the Rhodes Lynx 73-70 on Sunday.
Malachi Dooley led with 22 points and five assists. Perry Robinson followed with 17 points and 15 rebounds, his ninth double-double of the season. The twins put up nine points each, with Jackson Kemp adding seven rebounds and Mason Kemp adding four.
"That was a hard-fought win," said head coach Philip Ponder. "It's always a physical game with Rhodes. We struggled offensively in the first half, but our defense kept us in the game and our offense finally got going in the second half. Our defense and our energy definitely won the game for us today. We are happy to survive and advance, and we're looking forward to the semifinals."
The SAA quarterfinal game had a slow start, with both teams struggling to find their footing. Rhodes was ultimately the first to score, and the Lynx built up a 5-0 lead. J. Kemp put the Petrels on the board with a layup, but Rhodes remained in the lead. The Lynx and the Petrels appeared evenly matched in the first half, heading into halftime four points apart.
The game shifted in the second half. Energy got even higher as the Petrels closed in on the Lynx. Logan Turner hit a 3-pointer as part of a 9-0 run that finally gave Oglethorpe the upper hand, and Jordan James added a layup for a 43-39 lead. The Petrels only strengthened their lead for the remaining 10 minutes, featuring skilled plays from Dooley, Robinson, the Kemps and Dylan Pumpian. Oglethorpe advanced in the SAA championship and knocked out Rhodes with a 73-70 win.
