ROME, Ga. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels battled the Berry Vikings in the Southern Athletic Association semifinals but fell 84-65.
Mason Kemp led with 16 points, four assists and three steals. Perry Robinson followed with 15 points and eight rebounds, then Dylan Pumpian had 13 points. Jordan James put up 10 points and four rebounds.
"We laid an egg tonight," said head coach Philip Ponder. "We didn't play anywhere close to the way we've been playing for the last four weeks. We actually outshot Berry in the first half and in the second half, but they won the offensive rebounding battle and the turnover battle, so they got 14 more shots than us. Only making five out of 14 free throws didn't help, either. I'm disappointed with the way we played today and the way the season ended, but I'm incredibly proud of the team for how we played down the stretch, winning seven out of eight games."
The Petrels and the Vikings went toe-to-toe in the first half. Robinson, Pumpian and the Kemps made a 10-2 run early on. The Vikings lacked long runs, but still ended the period with a 42-37 lead.
Berry did eventually find those runs in the second half, and this would eventually give them the win. Oglethorpe still made strides to advance in the tournament, with M. Kemp even sinking a late 3-pointer, but the Petrels fell 84-65. This loss knocked Oglethorpe out of the championship tournament and allowed Berry to advance to the finals.
"This team showed a lot of resiliency all year," Ponder added. "We had five wins where we came back from a double-digit deficit, and we started 0-3 in league play and bounced back from that. Congrats to our seniors on great careers. I know they will do well and be successful post Oglethorpe."
