Petrels back on track after wild road win

MARYVILLE, Tenn.—Will Lumpkin turned in another solid start, and Oglethorpe's baseball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a 14-8 win over Hanover Friday evening. The game was played at Maryville College on the opening day of a weekend early-season tournament.

Lumpkin struck out seven and allowed only two hits and two runs. He went 5.2 innings and was well in line to pick up his second win until a late rally from Hanover tied the game in the eighth.

Oglethorpe moved to 4-4 overall on the young season after scoring in each of the first three innings and four of the first five innings, then capping things off with six runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Mason Pearcy had a two-out double in the first to score Trey Kinnan, then Pearcy came home to score on an error a few minutes later to give the Stormy Petrels a 2-0 lead.

Jonathan Cruz then doubled that lead in the second inning with a one-out single up the middle to make it 4-0, and Oglethorpe went ahead 5-0 in the next inning on a Hanover error.

Hanover got on the board in the top of the fourth on a solo home run, but Lumpkin responded by striking out four of the next six batters he faced before exiting in the sixth. It was not until the eighth that Hanover's bats came to life with a big rally that tied the game. However, Oglethorpe's offense had the answer this time by responding with the same crooked number in the bottom half to seal the victory.

Game Notes

  • Jaxson Corr went 3-for-3 at the plate, adding a run and three RBI's.
  • Pearcy went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's.
  • Kinnan also went 2-for-5, and he added two runs and two stolen bases.
  • Lumpkin did not receive a decision but still posted an outstanding line of 5.2 innings, two hits, two runs, three walks and seven strikeouts.
  • Dylan Quintilio got the win in relief after closing the door for the final four outs. He struck out two.
