Petrels sweep weekend at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn.—Oglethorpe won its third straight game after a weekend sweep at Maryville, completed with a 13-2 win on Sunday. Oglethorpe defeated Hanover 14-8 on Friday before defeating Maryville Saturday (10-3) and Sunday.

The wins improved Oglethorpe to 6-4 on the year and 3-1 on the road.

Ryan Causey got the scoring going in Saturday's win with a two-RBI double in the top of the first, but after Maryville tied it with one in the first and another in the second, it was Cooper Krause who gave the Stormy Petrels the lead for good with a two-run homer in the third. It was his second homer of the season and opened the floodgates for Oglethorpe to score six more runs and pull away for the easy victory.

A similar story unfolded in Sunday's game, as Maryville had an early lead but a Jonathan Cruz RBI double opened the gates for a five-run third then a four-run fourth. Oglethorpe pulled ahead 11-1 after four and a half innings and held on easily from there.

Saturday Game Notes

  • Causey went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI's.
  • Cruz went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
  • Trey Kinnan went 1-for-3 with three RBI's.
  • Krause went 1-for-3 with a go-ahead two-run homer in the third.
  • JB Sain got the start and went four innings allowing only two runs.
  • Charlie Boyce, Colin Stewart and Konner Burrell finished the last five innings and combined for only one unearned run. They struck out six and walked two, allowing only one hit.

Sunday Game Notes

  • Causey led Oglethorpe with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. He added two runs and an RBI.
  • Cruz (2-for-4), Kinnan (2-for-4) and Jaxson Corr (2-for-3) also had multiple hits. Cruz and Corr both scored three times, and Kinnan had three RBI's.
  • Crause and Drew Jabaley both hit long balls. Crause hit his third of the season with a three-run shot in the fourth; Jabaley hit his first with a two-run shot in the fifth.
  • Jace Armstrong picked up the win after going seven strong innings. He scattered five hits and a walk on the way to only two runs while striking out seven.
  • Dylan Quintilio struck out the side in a scoreless eighth to close the final door on the Scots.
