Petrels bring the storm for record-tying win

ATLANTA—Berea took the early lead on an unearned run in the top of the first but it was nearly all Oglethorpe from there. With multiple runs coming across in all but one inning, including a four-run first and nine-run third, the Stormy Petrels ran away with a scoring record 24-4 win Tuesday evening in a nonconference game at Hermance Stadium.

The 24 runs matched the program record, set on March 24, 2009, in a 24-4 win over North Central. Jonathan Cruz, who went 4-for-5, scored five times which also tied the Oglethorpe record, matching what only four other Petrels have done in the history of the program.

Cooper Krause and Ryan Causey both hit long balls in the first inning to help Oglethorpe go into the lead for good. Krause hit a solo shot with one out to break the 1-1 tie, then Causey hit his five pitches later, scoring Mason Pearcy who doubled in between the dingers.

It was 4-1 after one, and Oglethorpe went ahead 13-2 after three thanks to nine runs in the third, its biggest inning of the year. Jonathan Cruz had a two-RBI double in the inning, making it 7-2, and Drew Jabaley had a two-RBI single, making it 13-2.

Oglethorpe added scoring in the fourth, fifth and sixth. Four came across in the fifth and five came across in the sixth.

Game Notes
