ATLANTA – Oglethorpe's home opener ended in a 9-7 loss to the Point Skyhawks despite a great effort by the Stormy Petrels Wednesday night.
Joshua Tamarkin led with three goals and three ground balls. Israel Pendleton-Moore followed with two goals, while Dwayne Taylor and Liam Miller both scored one goal each.
Goalkeeper Xay Duax made seven saves and had five groundballs. Chris McDowell, Jax Cuni and Taylor all recovered four groundballs as well. McDowell also caused four turnovers.Â
Miller and Tamarkin combined for an early 2-0 lead against the Skyhawks as Oglethorpe set up a powerful first quarter. A later goal by Taylor marked three unanswered goals, and the Petrels were on fire. Point did manage a last-second goal, but Oglethorpe remained in high spirits.
The Skyhawks, however, scored early and often in the second quarter. Oglethorpe's first quarter lead, plus a goal from Pendleton-Moore, provided some padding, but Point headed into halftime with a 5-4 advantage.
The Petrels put up a fight in the third quarter, in which no one scored until another last-second goal by the Skyhawks. Point also opened scoring in the fourth quarter, but the Petrels found a window of opportunity. Pendleton-Moore and Tamarkin were able to score their second goals nearly back-to-back, and Oglethorpe found a new wave of energy. Tamarkin scored once more, bringing it to 8-7, but the clock was against this rally. Oglethorpe battled until the very end but fell 9-7 to Point.
