Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chloe Clemensen

Close game at Centre ends in defeat

DANVILLE, Ky. - After a long night, the Oglethorpe men's basketball team fell 80-74 to the Centre Colonels despite high scoring from multiple Stormy Petrels.

Jackson Kemp recorded his first double-double of the season, the second of his career, with 12 points and career-high 12 rebounds. Perry Robinson led the team with 27 points, followed by Malachi Dooley with 22. Kemp also made two steals and three assists. Robinson had six rebounds and five assists, while Dooley made seven assists.

"We shot 50% to their 43%, but they killed us with offensive rebounds and second-chance points," said head coach Philip Ponder postgame. "That was the difference in the game. Forty of their 80 points came in transition or on second-chance opportunities. You can't give good offensive teams extra opportunities to score, and we did, and it cost us."

Robinson sank a layup right off the bat and followed with a jumper to stun the Colonels. Centre managed a 3-point reply, but Kemp and Dooley combined for an 8-0 run to keep them at bay. Centre's next basket was for three again, but Dooley, Robinson and Jordan James created an 11-point run for a 17-6 lead with more than half of the period left. The Colonels were definitely a threat, but Oglethorpe won the first-half battle and headed into halftime up 42-34.

However, the Petrels did not win the war. Centre slowly but surely built up steam over the second half, reaching a 55-55 tie after 10 minutes. Willard Thompson hit a 3-pointer to break that tie, but Centre matched it. They matched multiple tie breakers and eventually found a small lead that would last the rest of the game. Dooley added two late layups to the board, but Centre triumphed 80-74.

"We have a tough couple of games coming up, but we know we can play with anyone in the league," added Ponder. "We just have to do more of the little things in order to get over the hump."

Game Notes

  • Robinson went 11-for-12 on field goals.
  • Dylan Pumpian had five rebounds.
  • Oglethorpe's last game against Centre went into overtime, but also ended in a loss at Dorough Field House.
