Melton posts near career high but Petrels drop close one

DANVILLE, Ky.—It was a two-point game with 30 seconds to go, but Oglethorpe could not close out Centre on the road and ultimately fell to the Colonels 69-62 Friday night in a Southern Athletic Association game. Malia Melton led with 23 points, one shy of her career high.

Oglethorpe trailed by one early in the fourth quarter after a triple from Briley Elder, but Centre finished the game on a 17-11 run after that. This included scoring the last five points in the final 30 seconds, all from the free-throw line, to clinch the win and season sweep of the Stormy Petrels.

The game featured five ties and three lead changes, with plenty of runs mixed in between. One such came late in the first half when Melton scored six of her 23 points on a 13-0 Oglethorpe run to close the second quarter and swing a 27-19 deficit into a 32-27 advantage at the break.

Game Notes

  • Melton's 23 points came on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 effort from the perimeter. She added eight rebounds and three assists.
  • Anna Conza followed with 12 points, and Keimarya Rivera scored 10 alongside 11 rebounds.
  • This was Rivera's seventh double-double of the season and 23rd of her career. It also marked her third straight double-double.
  • Sheraton Foster followed next in the scoring column with nine points and five rebounds.
