Women's lacrosse splits spring break

AVE MARIA, Fla. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels spent their spring break in the Florida sunshine, taking on the Otterbein Cardinals and the Ave Maria Gyrenes. Oglethorpe defeated the Cardinals 16-6 on Monday but fell 13-8 to the Gyrenes on Wednesday.

Oglethorpe 16, Otterbein 6

Makenna Bowens led with a career high of eight goals, won five draw controls, and had four ground balls. Jersey Cuni followed with two goals and three ground balls, while Ellis Mitchum made a season high of three assists. Anna Conza caused five turnovers and recovered four ground balls. Goalkeeper Tori Perez made nine saves.

Anna Ramsden scored the first goal of the game, which was quickly answered by the Cardinals. Bowens and Mariah Butler combined for three more goals to give the Petrels an edge, and it rattled Otterbein. Oglethorpe dominated in the second and third quarters, eventually reaching a 10-point lead and a running clock. The Cardinals briefly stopped that clock in the third quarter, but Bowens got it ticking again. Otterbein managed to score the final goal, but Oglethorpe walked away with a 16-6 win.

Game Notes

  • Bowens is now tied for third highest goals in a single game in program history. Ally Moir '24 made eight last season, while Juliana Altman '17 holds the school record of 10.
  • This was Oglethorpe's first ever game against Otterbein.
  • Alexandra Clark recorded her first ground ball.
  • The Petrels went 11-0 on draw controls and 10-11 on clears.
  • The game was played at a neutral park. 

Oglethorpe 8, Ave Maria 13

Bowens led with three goals followed by Ramsden with two. Butler had four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Mitchum won six draw controls and Conza four. Perez made 11 saves.

The Gyrenes kicked things off with three straight goals, which Bowens and Savannah Freeman responded to. However, this early lead was foreshadowing for the rest of the game. Ave Maria doubled Oglethorpe's score in the first and second quarters, posting an 8-4 lead at halftime.

The third quarter mirrored the first, as Ave Maria fired off three consecutive goals. Ramsden, Bowens and Butler made a dent in the Gyrenes' lead, but the Petrels ultimately suffered a 13-8 loss.

Game Notes

  • Conza recorded her first draw control wins and first free-position goal.
  • Oglethorpe took 25 shots compared to Ave Maria's 29.
  • The Petrels went 16-16 on clears, and the Gyrenes 17-17.
  • Oglethorpe won one more draw control than Ave Maria.
