ATLANTA – Despite a strong start and multiple personal wins, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels fell 10-9 to the University of Hartford Hawks Monday night.
Reigning Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week Makenna Bowens led with four goals, and Anna Ramsden scored three. Goalie Tori Perez made 11 saves. Anna Conza won a season high of six draw controls, and Amber Fuentes recovered a career high six ground balls. Mariah Butler made two assists.Â
Bowens, Ramsden and Butler combined for a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes. Hartford finally found their first goal halfway through the period, and Bowens quickly responded with another. The Hawks made the final goal of the first period, but the Petrels soared in with another great beginning to the second quarter. Jersey Cuni and Bowens created a 6-2 lead, but Hartford soon began their comeback. Oglethorpe held a 7-5 lead at halftime, then the slow third period ended at 8-6.
The fourth quarter began with both sides struggling for dominance, and after three minutes, Hartford found an equalizer. Excited by their success, the Hawks quickly pushed forward to a 10-8 lead. Anna Ramsden scored with just a minute left, then despite winning the next draw and earning a free position attempt with 30 seconds left, Oglethorpe fell 10-9.
