ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels hosted Sewanee for this year's Southern Athletic Association opener and fell 13-7 to the Tigers.
Makenna Bowens led with five goals, followed by Mariah Butler with two. Goalie Tori Perez made 14 ground balls and 17 saves. Adelais Burkholder recorded four caused turnovers while Kirstyn Johnson made three, career highs for both of them. Anna Conza and Savannah Freeman won two draw controls each.
Sewanee dominated the first quarter, scoring four goals before Butler could get the petrels on the board. Bowens made major strides in the second quarter, scoring three of her five goals as Oglethorpe moved to 6-4 by halftime.
The Tigers continued to overpower the Petrels in the third quarter, outscoring Oglethorpe 3-1. The fourth quarter still had potential for a comeback, as Butler scored first to set the score at 9-6. However, Sewanee finally managed a bigger gap in the score as time dwindled. Bowens scored her final goal with just a minute on the clock, but an even later goal by Sewanee cemented the 13-7 loss.
