ATLANTA—After a comeback win in game one, JB Sain tossed four perfect innings and a complete-game shutout as the Oglethorpe baseball team won the series with a doubleheader sweep against No. 14 Centre on Saturday. The Stormy Petrels won the first game 5-4 despite trailing 4-0, then one run in the second inning proved to be enough in a 1-0 win in game two.
The series win against the nationally ranked Colonels marked the third time in the last four seasons Oglethorpe accomplished such a feat. Last season, Oglethorpe won two out of three against No. 4 Birmingham Southern, and in 2022 the Petrels won two out of three against No. 25 Hendrix.
Oglethorpe 5, Centre 4 | Game One
It looked bleak midway through the fifth inning as Oglethorpe trailed 4-0, but a four-run fifth revitalized the Stormy Petrels, who eventually won it on a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Brick Conway homered for the first time this season to cut Centre's lead in half, scoring Aiden Hosford who walked with two out. Then, that two-out, bases-clear rally theme continued as a Jaxson Corr walk followed by back-to-back doubles by Jonathan Cruz and Trey Kinnan knotted the game at 4-4. Kinnan's double to center field scored two.
Oglethorpe's eighth-inning winning run came on another two-out hit when Hosford singled home Cooper Krause with a base hit to left field.
Cruz (2-for-3) and Hosford (2-for-2) both finished with multiple hits, while Konner Burrell picked up the win in relief to move to 2-0. Burrell pitched a perfect eighth, then Dylan Quintilio earned his fifth save with a scoreless ninth.
Oglethorpe 1, Centre 0 | Game Two
Sain (3-1) tossed the first shutout of his career in just his sixth start. It featured a perfect game through the first four innings and in the end a two-hit masterpiece where he faced only three over the minimum. Sain struck out three, walked none, allowed two hits and threw only 68 pitches in the seven-inning affair.
The game's only run came from Isaiah Pou who came home to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second.
Pou went 2-for-2 as one of six Petrels with a hit.
