ATLANTA—An Aiden Hosford two-out double in the third gave the Oglethorpe baseball team the lead, then Ryan Causey helped extend the lead with a two-out double in the fourth, but in the end the Stormy Petrels fell to Hendrix 11-9 Saturday afternoon in the finale of a three-game Southern Athletic Association series. Oglethorpe in fact suffered the sweep after losing both games of a twin bill Friday afternoon.
It looked bleak, then it looked good, then after all the dust had settled it sent Oglethorpe to its fifth straight loss.
Hendrix jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after one, then went ahead 5-0 midway through two, but the Petrels showed tremendous resilience to battle back with two in the second, four in the third and another two in the fourth.
Hosford smacked the first home run of his career, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the second to make it 5-2, and an inning later he drove in another pair with a double to left-center, swinging the Petrels into the lead, 6-5. Hosford's double followed a Drew Jabaley single and Nick Tarantino RBI groundout that brought the game to 5-4. Â
After Hendrix tied the game in the top of the fourth, Ryan Causey gave the Petrels the lead back with an RBI double in the bottom half. Isaiah Pou also came in to score in the inning, making it 8-6, but the Warriors would surge back into the advantage with four runs in the fifth.
Tarantino drove in another run in the eighth on a single through the left side, but the Petrels stranded two in the seventh, two more in the eighth, and the bases loaded in the ninth on the way to the loss.
The ninth inning looked especially good after Trey Kinnan and Cooper Krause posted back-to-back two-out hits to put runners on second and third, Krause at second representing the tying run. Pou then walked to put the winning run on but a strikeout ended the threat.
