DEMOREST, Ga.—A four-hit day from Jonathan Cruz plus a strong start from Cian Khajavi led Oglethorpe's baseball team to a midweek road win, 5-4 Tuesday night at Piedmont. The Stormy Petrels saw an early lead disappear before surviving a late scare in the victory.
Cruz's four-hit day included an RBI double in the fourth inning that gave Oglethorpe a 2-0 lead. It was sandwiched by a Shane Newsome RBI single in the second and a Trey Kinnan RBI groundout also in the fourth, the latter sending the Petrels to a 3-0 advantage.
Piedmont, who led the season series 2-0 entering the day, bounced back with a three-run homer to tie things up in the sixth. It took Khajavi off the hook for the win despite the freshman right-hander throwing a two-hit shutout through his first five innings of work.
Mason Pearcy put Oglethorpe back into the lead in the seventh, then Isaiah Pou doubled that lead to 5-3 in the ninth.
A one-out walk and two-out double in the bottom of the ninth gave the Petrels a scare as it became a 5-4 ballgame with the tying run eventually making it to third on a wild pitch. Konnor Burrell, however, got out of the threat with a strikeout looking to end the game.
Game Notes
- Cruz went 4-for-5 as one of four Petrels with multiple hits. Cooper Krause (2-for-5), Pou (2-for-3) and Aiden Hosford (2-for-4) followed.

- Khajavi's final line was 5.1 innings, three hits, two runs, three walks and four punchouts.
