MEMPHIS—Isaiah Pou's two-run homer and Jace Armstrong's gem in the opener, then Trey Kinnan's three-hit game in the nightcap helped Oglethorpe's baseball team extend its winning streak to three games with a doubleheader sweep over Rhodes Saturday afternoon on the road. Oglethorpe won game one 5-2 and game two 4-3.
Pou started the scoring in game one with a two-run homer, his 10th long ball of the year, in the fourth inning. It put Oglethorpe into the lead, but a two-run homer from Rhodes answered right back in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at 2-2.
Rhodes' home run was the only blemish for Petrel starting pitcher Jace Armstrong who went eight strong innings allowing only five hits, two runs and a walk while striking out three.
Cooper Krause put Oglethorpe back on the board with a two-out double to right-center field in the eighth inning, scoring Pou to make it a 3-2 game. One inning later, Jonathan Cruz pushed across two runs on a one-out single to left field to round out the scoring.
Tate Henderson picked up the save, his third, with a hitless ninth to seal the win.
Krause had the big score-opening hit in game two when he drove home Kinnan with a single to left field. This time, Rhodes not only answered back by tying the game in the bottom half but even going into the lead 2-1 with a pair of run-producing outs.
Oglethorpe traded the lead back in the next half inning though when Kinnan's two-RBI single brought in Mason Peacy and Nick Tarantino, who had walked and singled, respectively. One batter later, Pou drove Kinnan home on a double to left field, making it 4-2.
Rhodes looked to tie the game back up several times, most notably in the third when the Lynx scored one and had the tying run on second with nobody out. Dylan Quintilio escaped the threat with a flyout and double play ball that started a stretch where he retired his last eight. Quintilio threw a perfect fourth and fifth before Konner Burrell threw a perfect sixth and seventh.
Altogether, Quintilio and Burrell combined to retire the last 14 Lynx hitters in the game. Burrell's save was his second of the year.
Oglethorpe and Rhodes finish the series Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET. The SAA tournament is set to begin next weekend.
