MEMPHIS—Four runs in the fifth inning came just in time for the Oglethorpe baseball team to pick up a 5-1 win and complete a three-game Southern Athletic Association series sweep on Sunday. A rain delay followed the scoring outburst in the top of the six inning, ultimately leading the game to be called after five.
Cooper Krause put the Stormy Petrels on top in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly that brought in Trey Kinnan. After Rhodes tied the game with one in the bottom half, both teams went scoreless at 1-1 until Mason Pearcy scampered home on a wild pitch with one out in the fifth. It broke the tie for good and started a four-run frame that featured RBI singles from Jonathan Cruz, Isaiah Pou and Ryan Causey.
Kinnan finished the day 2-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases. Four other Petrels had a hit, including Pou who drove in one, scored one and also stole one base.
Colin Stewart pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing only one hit and no walks while striking out three. He relieved Will Lumpkin who went the first two innings allowing one run on no hits and a walk.
Series Notes
- Kinnan (6-for-12) and Shane Newsome (4-for-8) led Oglethorpe at the plate in the series, both batting .500. Kinnan scored four runs and had two RBI's.
- Krause went 3-for-7 (.429) for the series and added a double and three RBI's.
