Petrels headed to SAA Championships

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe's men's tennis, men's and women's track & field, men's and women's golf, and women's lacrosse teams are headed to the 2025 Southern Athletic Association championships this weekend.

The Petrels will enter as the No. 3 seed. Oglethorpe faces No. 6 seed and host Hendrix on Friday, April 25, at 2 p.m. ET. The second round will be the following day at the same time, against No. 2 seed Rhodes, who earned a first-round bye.

Team leaders this year: Bailey Raymond, Kellen Simmons, Sam Wasko, Noah George, Jefferson Page and Figge Pernfors. The team recently went on a four-match winning streak, with George instrumental in two big SAA wins and posting an 8-5 singles record. Raymond boasts an 11-3 singles record. Pernfors and Simmons hold a 9-2 doubles record, with Page and Wasko at 9-3.

Men's and Women's Track & Field

Oglethorpe will compete in Sewanee, Tennessee, on Friday-Saturday, April 25-26.

Out front for the men this season: Ashton Deriso, Zachary Benner, Beck James, Jordan McQueen, Ugohnofure Awarieta, Anthony Arredondo and Jaylon Taylor.

Deriso was named the SAA Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year and earned two athlete of the week nods. He set multiple new school and personal records and became the first in program history to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Deriso claimed titles in the 800m and the mile at the SAA Indoor Championship in March. Benner was also an athlete of the week and won the 5000m indoor conference title. He also set multiple new school and personal records, recording several top-five finishes. Deriso, Benner, James and Antonio Fuentes combined for the indoor DMR title.

Out front for the women this season: Keri Edwards, Evan Thomas, Amirah Ali, Aubrey Guyden, Hailey Wright, Kirsten Wright, Hannah Rhodes and Riley Michaud.

At the indoor championships, Edwards nabbed runner-up in the triple jump, Thomas placed third in the 200m, Ali third in the triple jump, Guyden fourth in the 60m, H. Wright fourth in the long jump and triple jump, Rhodes was fourth in the mile, and K. Wright was fifth in the 60m.

Thomas and Rhodes were named athletes of the week. 

Women's Lacrosse

No. 5 seed Oglethorpe will face No. 4 Centre on Friday, April 26, at 6 p.m. ET in Sewanee, Tennessee. The winner of that matchup will face the undefeated No. 1 seed and host Sewanee.

Team leaders this season: Tori Perez, Makenna Bowens, Savannah Freeman, Amber Fuentes, Anna Conza and Anna Ramsden, all named to the SAA All-Conference team.

Bowens has 72 goals, 10 assists and 45 draw controls on the season and was named athlete of the week twice. Perez is the team leader in ground balls and has made 131 saves for a .492 save percentage. She was also an athlete of the week. Ramsden has 33 goals so far, while Fuentes has 34 ground balls. Freeman has 38 draw controls, 30 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.

The Petrels will compete Friday-Sunday, April 25-27, in Dickson, Tennessee. Oglethorpe is currently ranked No. 9 in the country, and host Sewanee is ranked No. 4 according to the latest Clippd Scoreboard rankings.

Team leaders this season: Sam Karman, Jackson Hiller, Ryan Dunn, Beck Lewis and Corbin Scott.

The Petrels this spring won the Bill Cochran Collegiate, finished fourth at Camp Lejeune and fifth at the Savannah Invitational. They won the West Pines Collegiate back in October and were runners-up at the SAA Fall Preview. Hiller is currently ranked No. 19 nationally, followed by Karman as No. 45.

Karman, Hiller, and Dunn were athletes of the week.

Women's Golf

The Petrels will compete Friday-Sunday, April 25-27, in Dickson, Tennessee.

Team leaders: Abrianna Carstens, Sophia Morettini, Elizabeth Powell, Alexis Sinutko and Katie Sulko.

The Petrels set the program 54-hole scoring record after finishing third at Camp Lejuene. Powell finished third individually, followed by Morettini in ninth, Carstens in 13th and Sulko in 15th. Powell was named an athlete of the week twice and is ranked No. 100 nationally. The team is ranked No. 63 by Clippd.
