SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Centre Colonels 20-9 to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament Friday night.
Oglethorpe entered as the No. 5 seed and Centre as the No. 4 seed. Mariah Butler led the upset with six goals and four ground balls. Makenna Bowens followed with five goals, then Anna Ramsden scored three and won six draw controls. Goalie Tori Perez made 15 saves.Â
Bowens opened the game with an early unanswered goal, then there was a dry spell. Ramsden finally managed to score the next goal and got Oglethorpe's momentum back on track. Butler and Jersey Cuni added multiple more goals, but the Colonels were able to sneak in two of their own.
Bowens opened the second quarter as well, followed quickly by Anna Conza. Again, Centre managed two goals in the period but the Petrels headed into halftime up 13-4.
Cuni scored for the 10-point lead, then she, Conza and Savannah Freeman continued to score. The Colonels were clearly overwhelmed by the final quarter, but they did make the final goal of the game. Oglethorpe prevailed 20-9 to advance to the next round of the SAA Championship.
