Petrels battle Berry, fall in OT

ROME, Ga. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels hit several personal milestones and almost took down the Berry Vikings on their own turf, but Oglethorpe fell 11-10 in overtime.

Makenna Bowens led with four goals and one assist, followed by Anna Ramsden with three goals. Sophomore Jill Ursem made her debut as goalie, making 12 saves. Savannah Freeman won a career high eight draw controls, made two goals and one assist. Sarah Liang made a season high of five ground balls plus one assist. Mariah Butler recorded a career high of three caused turnovers.

Oglethorpe dominated the first quarter, outscoring Berry five to one. Ramsden got the first two goals, then Berry was able to score. Ramsden, Bowens, then Freeman created the 5-1 lead. The Vikings managed two goals early in the second quarter and were beginning to become more of a threat, outscoring Oglethorpe four to one. Another goal from Freeman kept the Petrels on top at halftime.

One-point differences seemed to be the theme of tonight's game. Berry briefly held a 9-6 lead in the third quarter, but Bowens scored back-to-back for a more even field. Jersey Cuni scored in the top of the fourth to tie things at 9-9, and tensions were high. Berry was the next to score, and they almost walked away with a 10-9 win. Bowens scored a late goal and Ursem made one final save to send the game into overtime.

Overtime proved that the two teams were equally matched, as it took two minutes for Conza to fire off the first shot of the period. It was saved by the Vikings, who used that ground ball to run down the field and score. Oglethorpe's first overtime game in two years ended with an 11-10 loss.

Game Notes

  • Conza made a career high two assists.
  • Ramsden made a season high of four ground balls.
