Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer earns draw against No. 4 Washington and Lee

ATLANTA—Owen VanMarter converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the season in the 81st minute, and Oglethorpe's men's soccer team came back to earn a draw against No. 4 Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon. The match was hosted by Emory as part of the Sonny Carter Invitational, and Anthony Rouse and Ethan Martinez were named to the all-tournament team for the weekend's two games.

VanMarter's goal equalized things after a stretch of nearly 65 minutes of Washington and Lee being in a 1-0 lead. The Generals' only tally of the match came at the end of the 16th minute when Spencer Furman found the back of the net with an assist to Willy Hall.

It marked the second straight game to start the season that Oglethorpe fell behind in the first half but also the second straight time the Petrels had an answer in the second half.

Oglethorpe moved to 0-1-1 on the young season after back-to-back games in Emory's Sonny Carter Invitational.

Match Notes

  • Oglethorpe was outshot by the No. 4-ranked Generals 12-6, including 7-3 on shots on goal.
  • Stanlee Etienne took two shots on goal, and Sebastian Lewis made six saves tending the net.
  • This marked Oglethorpe's second draw or better result against a top-five team in the last three seasons after the Petrels played Emory to a 2-2 draw in 2023.
