ATLANTA—Delaney Hanks tied it, Evan Thomas won it, and Rowan Gross secured it. In come-from-behind fashion, Oglethorpe's women's soccer team defeated visiting Covenant 3-1 Tuesday night at home.
The win marked Oglethorpe's second straight to start the season after the Stormy Petrels topped Agnes Scott 4-1 earlier this week in the season opener.
Covenant pounced early with a great goal from Georgie Strawbridge in the seventh minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Scots had plenty of momentum and controlled much of the possession in the early going from that early tally, but slowly over the next 25 minutes, the Stormy Petrels tipped the scales.
In the 34th minute, Hanks had the equalizer, gathering a loose ball in the box and putting it away for her second goal of the season. Then, just nine minutes later, Thomas put the Petrels into the lead with her first goal of the season after taking a beautiful pass from Abigail Zerm and finishing it from the right side off the inside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Zerm's great pass came via a through ball from the defensive side of the field, her first assist of the season.
Teams went into the halftime break at 2-1 before playing most of the second half in a one-goal game. That fact changed when Myleigh Oglesby found Gross open near the top of the box in the 82nd minute. Gross needed only two touches to bury a 20-yard shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
