ROME, Ga. - Berry hosted this weekend's Southern Athletic Association round robin as Oglethorpe faced Trinity, Centre, and Rhodes, all resulting in a 3-0 loss for the Stormy Petrels.
Match one vs. Trinity
The No.12 Trinity Tigers were the toughest match of the weekend, but Camdyn George got in seven kills and Isabelle Zwirn made a career high 11 digs. Oglethorpe did hold a 4-3 lead in the first set, but the Tigers were relentless and ended the set 25-11. Kills from George and Ella Hughes showed a promising start in the second set, but the Tigers went on to dominate again.
Ashlynn Stephens made the first kill of the third set and combined with George and Madison Williams for a 5-1 lead. The Petrels were able to put up much more of a fight in the final set, but still fell 25-19 for the 3-0 loss.
Match two vs. Centre
Gracie Sims made seven kills, Abby Wheeler had 11 digs, and Stephens made three aces. Williams and Autumn Lilly made three blocks.Â
George made the first kill of the game as a few Centre errors, plus a kill from Hughes, gave Oglethorpe a 5-1 lead. Oglethorpe held a decent lead until the final few points, going from a 19-16 lead to a 21-19 deficit. The Colonels dominated the final moments for a 25-20 win. The second set played out in a similar fashion, with Centre gaining more consistent control than before for a 25-19 win.Â
Oglethorpe opened the third set with a 3-0 lead, then increased it to 7-2 with kills and aces from Stephens and Sims. Once again, the Petrels seemed to be the dominant team, until the Colonels found a midway run. Centre won the final set 25-19 for another 3-0 loss.
Match three vs. Rhodes
Stephens made nine kills, Wheeler had 15 digs, and Lilly made 31 assists.
The first set was back-and-forth until the very end, as Rhodes reached set point and then the Petrels took a run. Kills from George, Lilly and Sims seemed like they would lift to those final points, but the Lynx made a kill for the 25th point.
The Petrels kept the energy up in the second set but still fell 25-18. Oglethorpe nabbed the first two points of the final set, but the Lynx dominated once again. The Petrels did find a late burst with kills by Stephens and an ace from Williams, but Oglethorpe lost 25-22 for their third 3-0 loss on the weekend.
