GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels nearly clinched another Southern Athletic Association win, but the Southwestern Pirates sailed away Sunday afternoon with the 91-90 win in the final seconds.
The game saw Jackson Kemp tally his 500th career rebound, making him the 18th player in program history to reach the milestone. Kemp also became the 10th player in Oglethorpe's NCAA era to reach 500 rebounds.
Carter Watkins led with a career high 25 points and six rebounds. Andrew LaVigne followed with 15 points. Mason Kemp made 14 points and Malachi Dooley hit 12, with both making seven rebounds.
The Pirates were the first to get on the board, but LaVigne quickly got the ball rolling. Southwestern held the lead for the first five or so minutes, until the Petrels found a 6-0 run. This run included a dunk by LaVigne and 3-pointer from Cyrus LaPlant to put the Petrels up 21-14. Oglethorpe held on to that lead and maintained the seven-point difference at the end of the period at 45-38.
The Pirates started the second period as well, with LaVigne and M. Kemp jumping in. Oglethorpe held at least a five-point lead for a majority of the period. Southwestern began to close in with just three minutes on the clock and managed to trail by just two points in the last 20 seconds. The Petrels led 90-88 and the game seemed to be decided, but Southwestern's last second 3-pointer created the 91-90 loss.
