Men's basketball tops Centre in OT

ATLANTA - After a tough string of losses, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels got back on the winning track with a 94-91 win against the Centre Colonels in overtime Sunday afternoon at home.

Kam Stone and Malachi Dooley scored 23 points each. This was a career high for Stone, who also added three steals. Dooley made 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Andrew LaVigne and Carter Watkins followed with 15 points each, then Jackson Kemp with nine points and nine rebounds.

The Colonels began the first period with an alarming 11 point lead, then LaVigne put the Petrels on the board. Oglethorpe spent the entire first period trying to catch up, but still lagged 50-44 at halftime.

J. Kemp and Dooley opened the second period with an 8-0 run to put the Petrels in the lead for the first time at 52-50. Centre soon regained their lead but would never lead as dramatically as in the first period again. The second period was basket-for-basket, with the score tying seven times and the lead changing five times.

In the final minutes, the Colonels had a 5-0 run to put them up 79-77 until Stone made another layup. The score stayed tied at 79-79 for over a minute, as both teams made several attempts to push forward. Neither were successful, and the game headed into overtime.

Centre made the first basket in overtime, but the Petrels dominated the period. J. Kemp, Stone, Dooley and Watkins combined for an 8-0 run that ultimately decided the game. Stone, Dooley, plus both J. and Mason Kemp made a string of free throws to reach 94 points. The Colonels made two last-ditch efforts, including an impressive buzzer-beating halfcourt basket by Ryan Shene, but Oglethorpe walked away with the 94-91 win.

Game Notes

  • Cyrus LaPlant made two blocks and four rebounds.
  • Oglethorpe also went into overtime against Centre last season but lost 93-89.
