JACKSON, Miss. - The Stormy Petrels crushed the Millsaps Majors 4-0 Friday afternoon to earn Oglethorpe's first Southern Athletic Association victory of the season so far.Â
Evan Thomas led with a career high three goals, and Mikayla Stuart counted for the other. The Petrels dominated possession, taking 25 shots versus Millsaps' five.
Thomas' first goal came before the 20th minute thanks to an assist from Abigail Zerm. Stuart quickly turned around and scored one of her own, giving the Petrels a decisive lead in under 30 minutes. Oglethorpe continued to shoot, but all attempts were deflected or saved by the Majors.
Thomas received a yellow card at the top of the second half, but responded gracefully with another goal. Millsaps took a few shots of their own throughout the game, but none came close to the gloves of Masha Renggli and Katie Crim thanks to pressure from defenders Ana Williams, Jasmine Cardenas, Lauren Byers, Gabi Plaia and Lily Burford. Thomas scored her third and final goal toward the end of the period with an assist by Marlie Sikora. The 4-0 win marked Oglethorpe's first SAA win, and the second clean sheet of the season.
