Stormy Petrels fall in Wooster finale, series slips away

ATLANTA—The Oglethorpe University baseball team opened its weekend series against The College of Wooster with an offensive outburst in game one but dropped the final two contests, falling 2-1 in the three-game set. The Stormy Petrels (1-2 on the weekend) plated 11 runs in Friday's opener to secure an 11-7 victory before Wooster responded with 14-1 and 9-7 wins to claim the series.

Game One: Oglethorpe 11, Wooster 7

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Oglethorpe steadily chipped away before erupting for a seven-run fifth inning to seize control.

Evan Smallwood put the Petrels on the board with a solo homer down the left-field line in the second. The offense found its rhythm in the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Trey Kinnan, an RBI double from Kaden Stephenson, and a go-ahead two-RBI triple from Will Weaver that gave Oglethorpe its first lead of the day.

Drew Jabaley followed with an RBI double, and Ryan Causey delivered the knockout blow in the sixth with a two-run homer to right center to stretch the advantage to 10-6.

Parker Spring earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings with four strikeouts to move to 1-0 on the year. Konner Burrell and Tyler Hower combined to allow just one run over the final 2.1 innings to secure the victory.

Five Petrels recorded multi-hit performances as Oglethorpe totaled 11 hits and drew five walks in the win.

Game Two: Wooster 14, Oglethorpe 1

Wooster jumped out early in Saturday's contest and never relinquished control. The Fighting Scots scored twice in the first inning before Causey answered with a solo home run down the left-field line to cut the deficit to 2-1.

However, a big fourth inning by Wooster broke the game open, and the Petrels were unable to recover. Oglethorpe was limited to three hits in the game, including a pinch-hit single from Ethan Snipes and a base knock from Jack Perno.

Game Three: Wooster 9, Oglethorpe 7

The Petrels showed resilience in Sunday's finale, battling back and holding a mid-game lead before Wooster pulled away late.

After trailing 2-0, Nick Morgan drove in a run with a single in the second. Cade Eidam sparked a three-run third inning with a two-RBI double to give Oglethorpe a 3-2 advantage.

Wooster responded with a three-run fourth and added insurance in the sixth and eighth innings. Oglethorpe mounted a final push in the ninth as Eidam delivered another two-RBI double and Aiden Hosford launched a two-run homer to left, trimming the deficit to 9-7. The rally fell just short as Wooster held on to complete the series win.

Eidam finished the finale 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Hosford drove in two. Drew Jabaley scored three runs and reached base three times in the loss.
