Petrels fall short in close contest against Piedmont

ATLANTA—The Oglethorpe University baseball team faced off against Piedmont University in a hard-fought contest, ultimately falling short with a final score of 7-5 Tuesday evening. The Stormy Petrels struggled with missed opportunities but showcased moments of resilience throughout the game.

Oglethorpe started strong, scoring two runs in the second inning thanks to a clutch two-RBI single from Jace Armstrong. Teams were through the middle innings tied at 2-2 until Piedmont took control of the game with a three-run seventh inning that shifted the momentum.

Despite trailing, Oglethorpe didn't back down. In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Ryan Causey launched a two-run homer that narrowed the gap to 5-4, igniting hope for a comeback. The Petrels managed to plate another run in the eighth, but Piedmont's offense continued to apply pressure, scoring two additional runs to secure their lead.

Throughout the game, Oglethorpe recorded seven hits but struggled defensively, committing four errors that ultimately cost them crucial runs. The pitching staff held strong but faced challenges against Piedmont's aggressive base running, allowing seven stolen bases.

Key performers to note were Causey who led the offense with a strong performance, contributing a home run and three RBIs, and Armstrong who made his mark with two RBIs, keeping the pressure on Piedmont's pitching staff.
