ATLANTA- Oglethorpe's home opener ended in an 18-8 loss to the Greensboro Pride despite a great effort by the Stormy Petrels Saturday evening.
On the offensive side, Gannon Johnson led with four goals and two assists. Liam Miller added three more goals, and Peyton Knowles added one, to make up the Petrels eight total tallies. Gabe Hunter won 10 faceoffs.
Goalkeeper Wyatt Desaussure made an impressive 21 saves. Jerald Spoto had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Alexander Martelo Reyes and Daniel Carpenter both caused one turnover each.
Oglethorpe opened the game with strong offensive pressure, scoring three times in the first quarter behind goals from Johnson and Miller. Miller added a second goal later in the period, while Johnson remained active on both ends of the field as the Petrels matched Greensboro's early pace.
The second quarter saw Oglethorpe continue to battle through a physical stretch. Johnson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal following a faceoff win, keeping the Petrels within one. Despite multiple shot opportunities and solid defensive possessions, Greensboro was able to capitalize late in the half to take a slim lead into halftime.
Oglethorpe responded in the third quarter with its strongest stretch of play. Miller found the back of the net early off an assist from Johnson, followed shortly by another Johnson goal to close the gap. The Petrels controlled key possessions and ground balls, and Johnson completed the surge with a late goal to pull within three heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Oglethorpe continued to generate offense and maintain pressure. Knowles scored midway through the quarter to keep the Petrels within reach, but Greensboro was able to answer and hold off the late rally. Oglethorpe battled until the final whistle but ultimately fell in a tightly contested matchup.
